Some favorite around Florida can be found in other southern states while some are all Floribbean.
Some of the favorite cuisines you may find in other parts of the country but are local favorite include:
Ambrosia, which is a yummy fruit salad, created with mandarin oranges, coconut, pineapple, marshmallows, and sour cream.
Citrus fruits of course are on the top of the list as many are grown throughout Florida. Some of these you can find sold by farmers at roadside stands and include oranges, tangerines, and grapefruit, which are sold year round. Other delectable fruits you can find in Florida include strawberries, which can be a real treat during the wintertime.
Conch are sea life that live in shells that you take home in order to hear the ocean when you are far from the tropical white sandy beaches of Florida. Conch before being cooked is beaten with a meat mallet in order to tenderize the meat. Conch can be found fried or in chowder, in salads, and created as conch fritters. Most people say conch has a slight almond flavor.
Florida is home to a large Cuban population and with this comes delightful Cuban cuisine. Some of the favorite Cuban dishes include buttered Cuban bread, cup of café con leche, frijoles negros, arroz con pollo, boliche, Cuban mojo-roast pork, salteado, and deviled crab. The most favorite Cuban dish has to be paella with is rice smothered with such delectable treats as chicken, crab claws, oysters, lobster, scallops, shrimp, clams, and mussels. You may even wish to try flan for dessert, which is egg custard with caramel sauce.
Divinity is a delectable sweet and yummy treat that is created with lots of sugar, corn syrup, vanilla, egg whites, and pecans.
Florida lobster is on the grainy side and is not really sweet even though the restaurants on the coast serve better lobster than the inland ones. If you really want tasty lobster then you ask for Maine or Caribbean.
Grits is an all time southern favorite made from corn that is ground into a unique treat. Some love grits with sugar and cream while other love it served as a breakfast treat with butter, salt, and pepper. Cheese is also a real treat added to grits. Since this is a southern treat may northerners believe the Cream O’ Wheat is grits, which is a mistake.
Key lime pie is not what you think; many people are use to a green pie, which is not the true color of the awesome Key Lime pie served in Florida. The true Key lime pie is yellow with a graham cracker or regular crust. It should be a bit on the tart side served with a tad of whipped cream and a slice of lime on top. Some restaurants serve it with meringue instead of whipped topping; however, the color of the pie will let you know if it is truly a Key lime pie.
